Modelling for Brand X Liquid Latex Paint

Modelling for latex paint can be different than other types of bodypaint modelling and has a different preperation and removal process. Here are instructions taken from Brand X Liquid Latex's site to help aid you in how to prepare:

Important Warnings

People with latex or ammonia allergy, extremely sensitive skin or sensitivity to ammonia smell should avoid use of Brand X™ Liquid Latex. A test patch of skin is recommended prior to use. If a rash develops, remove latex, wash the affected areas with soap and water, and discontinue use. Liquid Latex should only be applied to children under strict supervision. Do not ingest, and keep out of eyes, nose, mouth and other orifices. This product is non toxic and biodegradeable, however, do not spill on carpets, clothing and other permeable objects, as liquid latex is permanent on such items. This product should not be used as a prophylactic or contraceptive and can be corrosive and should not be used on certain metals, such as iron, silver, brass and bronze. Stainless steel and aluminum are generally not reactive with latex. Simply Latex™ assumes no legal responsibility for consumer’s use of this product and advises to please use responsibly.

About Brand X™Liquid Latex

Brand X Latex™ is a fun creative product that is only limited by your imagination! Paint it directly onto skin to design and enjoy your own latex clothing, costumes and fashions.

Brand X Latex™ is a natural, biodegradeable and non-toxic result of tree sap and does not contain petroleum or bonding agents commonly found in paint. This allows the skin to breathe underneath.

Brand X Latex™ can be applied to Spandex™, Lycra™, and denim for reusable latex clothing and is great for costumes, clothing, masks or dressing up for your favorite sporting event and should last several hours when applied generously.

Use Brand X Latex™ finishing products for best results. Liquid Latex dries tacky and use of finishing products such as Shyne™, will leave latex smooth and add a shine to the latex, while Glymmer™ will add a metallic or pearlescent effect to the final application. When liquid latex dries, it will be tacky and may stick to itself or other objects it touches and tear. Use of the Simply Latex™ finishing products will leave the latex smooth and add an enamoring effect to the latex. (Trina's Note: In other words, make sure you do not touch painted areas to other painted areas until the final sealant has been applied or we have to peel off and start over again.)

Preparing To Use Liquid Latex

It is best to remove hair from areas to be painted; however, it is not always necessary. Liquid Latex can be removed from small amounts of body hair with ease. Trimming can be done instead of shaving, but to avoid skin irritation do not apply directly after shaving. (Trina's note: I recommend clean shaven!)

Apply a generous amount of any moisturizing lotion for easier removal.and to help prevent irritation. Light vegetable oil can be used to coat areas with heavier hair growth. (Trina's note: I will have one of these on me to put on the body before we begin but you are also welcome to put on lotion after showering.)

If applying Liquid Latex to the face, be sure container has vented properly and apply a light coating of vegetable oil or petroleum jelly to the eyebrows for easier removal. Make sure to keep latex out of eyes, ears, mouth and nose.

Removing Liquid Latex

Simply remove liquid latex by peeling it off. Removal should be done slowly to avoid possible skin irritation. If latex was appllied over fine body hair, there may be a slight pulling sensation, but should not remove the hair itself. For those with medium to heavy body hair, it is recommended that latex be removed in a shower with warm water and soap. Be sure to collect latex so not to clog shower drain. If latex is dried into hair, use baby oil and a comb to breakdown the latex and remove it. Latex is permanent in carpets, drapes and other porous fabrics and materials. (Trina's note: make sure to protect your shower and sink drains- it can clog your pipes. Also on trickier, hairy areas, I use a bar of Master's Artist Hand Soap, which can be found at most art or crafting stores, to create a moisturizing lather which allows the latex to be removed easier. Again, in my experience, no hair is my recommendation.)

I recommend Brand X Liquid Latex Paint over other brands as it is the top selling liquid latex in the world, easy to find in stores like SPENCERS, Silly Farm, or Natasha's Attic and has good color selections including UV Blacklight.

Modelling for Trina Merry

So you'd like to model for me. Great! Paring up the correct human canvas with my concepts is an important part of my process & the relationships formed are so valuable to me both as an artist and a person. I started out by having my good friends model for me and now I am happy to say, some of the models I have painted have become good friends!

I am a fairly versatile painter and I know that has a wide-range appeal. But really modelling for me has three fairly distinct avenues. The first option is a commissioned bodypainting where the model pays the artist for the process of being painted. The second option is a TF (volunteer) model. The third option is an event or promo model who is often paid by a third party who is also hiring me to paint at their event.

COMMISSIONS
Commissioned bodypaintings are where the artist is "hired" to paint a particular individual or couple. Commissions allow the clients some creative influence regarding style and subject matter and commissions also guarantee a painting will occur on the agreed person and or model. If styling, photography or hair is needed, Trina has wonderful references she can give you and can often pull on the best talent in the area for the project. Commissioned bodypaintings can include: logo work, tradeshows, publication work, album covers, music videos, maternity, couples shoots, personal shoots, portfolio building, costumes for events, & more!

Here is what the process usually entails for a commission:

1) An initial discussion between the artist and the potential client/model starts the process. This can be in person, telephone or email conversation.
2) An evaluation of the model's body must then be made as to establish possible poses and angels to be painted. This is most often and best done with the artist doing a photo shoot personally or working closely alongside the photographer for the project to do a test shoot.
3) a deposit is then paid to the artist.
4) The artist then designs the painting and has it approved by the client.
5) The painting day is scheduled.
6) The painting is created and the balance of the commission is paid to the artist.
7) The client decides upon a type, size and quantity of prints desired. (Prints are a separate option and are not included as a part of the commission fee.)
8) Clients have a variety of options regarding the ownership of the image created. Shared ownership with the artist is the most common and least expensive.

A spontaneous commission is also possible requiring less preparation and time invested by both artist and model. These commissions are more about color, style and spontaneity and less about specific designs and concepts.

TF MODELLING:

FINE ART
TF modeling usually involves the entire day being set aside to be painted. This type of painting requires patience, focus & a kind heart. The images that come from fine art TF modelling often are shown in galleries, exhibits, books, magazines & more.

The process to become a fine art TF model is the following:
Trina or the photographer of the fine art series photographing the potential model completely nude. This photo session is called a "test" and as many as 30 poses can be taken. At the end of a viewing all photos are then reviewed by both the artist and model. A complete test session can take from 30 to 60 minutes including the review of photos taken. The potential model is then cataloged for future review and use. Tests are offered indiscriminately to those interested in being painted however actually being chosen to be painted is another process entirely. Shape, proximity, personality and inspiration are all factors that help the artist to choose who he will or will not work with. Considerably less then half of all potential models viewed will be painted. However many potential models find the viewing in and of itself a unique and worthwhile experience. Volunteer models have no input regarding the painting and it's creative direction but they are shown in advance of the scheduled painting exactly what the artists vision is.

EDITORIAL/FASHION
Trina also works with TF models for publication submissions (fashion, editorial, etc) & more. These often are bodypaintings that work with styling. Models will often do an unpaid test shoot with the photographer in advance of the painting and/or may need to meet with the artist in person (one on one or audition) before the painting.

EVENT
Monthly, Trina will bring already painted models or paint live at art events, festivals, performances, fashion shows & bodypaint competitions. She usually looks for people who are very extroverted, love attention, and are performers by nature. There's an opportunity to TF model for this. The media, social networking and publishing that comes from this type of modelling is pretty huge. Theres potential travel opportunities, modelling awards, & networking at these events. Please set up and interview with the artist and/or arrange for her to see any performances you may be doing locally. A non-nude test shoot may also be arranged (we want to make sure you can pose well for the camera as well as perform). Once a relationship is established and the model has shown they are great event models, Trina usually contacts these models first for paid event/promotions modelling.

SPONTANEOUS & EXPERIMENTAL PAINTINGS
Trina also does some experimental, spontaneous and "sketchpad" bodypaintings which are created when inspiration hits at home or while on the road. Please let her know your availability and she may call you spontaneously for one of these bodypaintings.

PAID MODELLING
Trina NEVER pays models. However, there are the rare opportunities where Trina is asked by a client (corporate client, club, etc) who has booked her to help book models who are paid for events, promotions, corporate tradeshows & more. The casting is heavily dependent on what the client wants and they are ultimately the one hiring you and paying you at the end of the day, so what a client may ask for may be different from who Trina will typically select for personal projects. However, that being said, Trina will usually suggest first to the client models she has worked with- paid or TF- who have proven themselves to be good models (professional, extroverted, talkative, photogenic, easy to be painted, prepared, good performers, etc). Trina does not book models for modelling agencies so please contact them if you are looking to model for them.

FINALLY
All models who are painted will receive images for their portfolio and can arrange to receive prints thru the photographer.

While the print was only $75, this lady worked up enough desire, guts, & strategy to thieve. Some part of me is kinda furious about it. The other part wants to laugh & feels like I've arrived haha! Aren't art heists saved for like Van Gough?

Apparently there was a Picasso art heist in San Francisco this week too. I kinda take that as a compliment. =P

These images are up everywhere- on my facebook, flickr, free to download, in METRO Magazine this week & in NorCal Magazine this month AND YET, this woman wanted her very own print mounted onto foamcore.

I ask, is $75 really worth jail lady? Cuz... we GOTCHA!!! Yup, those little cameras in coffee shops ACTUALLY FILM STUFF!!! Its called evidence.

I will be creating an art installation of bodypaintings called "THE ART ALIVE GALLERY" on the street with full creative teams & many models & performers (dancers of all sorts, fire twirlers, hot models, hula hoopers & more)!

I will also be doing a "mashup" with modern, avante garde dance company "Tahira: The Pure Dance Theater". They will be dancing around sunset- gonna be amazing!!!

Finally, I'll be joining The Red Paintings on stage for their 45 minute set- the very band who exposed me to bodypainting in the first place!!!

hello! I'm looking for fellow collaborators to create a LIVING GALLERY on the streets of Downtown San Jose for this year's SubZERO Festival!

I'm looking for Models, Dancers, Street Performers, etc... to be living works of bodypainted art in my mobile gallery space. (No nudity. Thong & Pasties is a minimum in SJ.)

Build Your Fashion Portfolio is an opportunity to shoot behind a professional lighting scheme designed by a professional. You will receive a model releases and be able to use the images you shoot in your online portfolio.

Opening Reception: Art Alive by Trina Merry A rich collaboration with a variety of talented Bay Area photographers- wet plate, fine art, fashion, and maternity photography.

Bodypainting had been a part of tribal culture tracing back to the earliest human gatherings. In the 1960's, avante garde and performance artists starting utilizing bodypaint and, in 1998, bodypaint became its own genre of art. Simultaneously contemporary and ancient, bodypaint crosses the genres of paint, performance, installation, photography, and video. It is hitting the mainstream in venues as varied as International Art Galleries, Sport Illustrated, Playboy, AT&T ads, fashion, clubs and even pregnant bellies.

Trina Merry has been exploring and focusing on bodypainting solely since her installation "The Television Totem Pole" at the SubZERO Festival 2010. This exhibit showcases her explorations that have spawned and informed her other bodypaint series, music videos, and current work.

Good Karma Resturant validates parking in participating lots & has great food, beer & Barefoot Coffee!

The Opening Reception is from 7pm-9:30pm. Feel free to walk the block or take a FREE pedicab over to the rest of the South FIRST FRIDAYS festivities afterwards!

Isn't Bodypainting, Like, Porn, Or Something?

I seem to be having this conversation a lot lately as bodypainting is becoming more popular and adapted by ad companies and the adult industry. It's odd because that really wasn't an issue when I started painting. I respect people's moral concern and what follows in an attempt, albeit, an incomplete conversation on the topic of "nakedness" vs. "nudity"- a conversation that has been going on in Art since the conservatives hacked off "inappropriate parts" on Greek and Roman sculptures and replaced them with leaves.

The response that I find helpful, both in navigating "nudity" vs. "naked" and also "what is art" lies in intention.

If there are four models standing in front of you painted exactly the same as a leopard, but one is a stripper, another is about to do a perfume ad, the third is a spokesperson for PETA, and the fourth is a part of a conceptual art project, which is naked and which is nude? They all look beautiful, the artist did a great job painting all of them, so what is art and what is propaganda (a work with a message intending to persuade or dissuade)? Is the artist wrong in painting these models? (Heck, is the stripper, who is now painted, even naked anymore???)

A secondary but related issue is, can the artist paint both, one for pay and one for creative fulfillment? Toulouse Lautrec did, and guess what, art historians love his posters for the Moulin Rouge. So honestly, I don't know. I don't live in a country that supports artists financially so I have to decide if I will paint for money (gaining technique and skill) AND creative fulfillment or Puritanically separate my process of making art from a job that pay the bills so it doesn't "poison" my soul or my art. I simple don't have a good answer yet.

We all have difficult areas to navigate in our daily lives and jobs and I find the best thing to do is to focus on loving each other and our creator and stop focusing on judgement. I know bodypainting and making art for a living is a little less conventional than say an office admin or coffee shop barista, but I find people who are opposed to it, simply due to nudity, have a few issues to work out inside themselves. I am happy to discuss those with you, to keep you in my prayers, and understand if it's just not your thing. After all, being an accountant or a nurse was never something I was cut out to do, but I'm still glad they're around. I hope ya feel the same way about artists.

In this blog I hope to address some of the most common questions I get while bodypainting.

Q. Does it tickle to get bodypainted?

A. It sometimes tickles a little, but not as bad as you'd expect! =) Most models say it feels like you are getting a relaxing treatment like a massage or a facial.

Q. How did you start bodypainting?

A. I love the Dresden Dolls and they suggested I model as a human canvas for their opening band "The Red Paintings" on stage in San Francisco a few years back. Modeling on stage was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life and once I tried it, I was hooked! I started painting people at events and went on tour with bands and loved the energy and the performance side of bodypainting.

For the SubZERO Festival in San Jose, I decided to change things up and video bodypaintings as they happened, creating a sculptural totem pole out of televisions that played these videos about the different neighborhoods (or urban tribalism) of San Jose. I paired up with a documentary photographer working at the Citadel Artist Studios with me. I loved the opportunity to explore new paints and perfect the paintings into a finished project while he documented the process and finished painting. I still am in love with performance art as I put the audience's energy into the work, and am finding the photography process is helping me mature as a painter.

Q. What kind of paint do you use?

A. I use professional, non-toxic waterbased bodypaints. No one is sponsoring me or anything, but I use whatever gets the job done. I have paints by Wolfe, Kryolan, Ben Nye, Fantasy Worldwide, and Snazaroo in my kit. I have used non-toxic acrylic, airbrush, latex, cream and makeup in addition to these. If you have allergies, LET ME KNOW!

Q. Will I be nude?

A. In general with bodypainting, a model wears a g-string thong, whether male or female, and that's it. The paint coverage is very good. I am highly protective of my models when in public settings and so models can sometimes wear pasties, strapless bras, even sports bras and boy shorts for event modeling. It all depends on the project. I have done implied nudes where the model wears nothing at all. If you are honest about your comfort level, I will work with you when an appropriate project presents itself. However, I don't like to retouch images, to maintain artistic authenticity, so less is more for most projects.

Q. How long does it take to be painted?

A. It can take anywhere from 1-4 hours for a partial bodypainting and 4-8 hours for a full bodypainting depending on the complexity and type of paint used. I require a minimum of 2-3 hours per model for fashion shows with a paid assistant present.

Q. Will the paint come off my clothes or robe?

A. Let's just say no and then you won't have to be disappointed.

Q. How do I take off the paint?

A. Please see "Model Preparation" on issues involving paint.

Q. I've never modeled before and I totally don't have a model's body. Are you sure you want to paint me? What kind of model are you looking for?

A. If I say I want to paint you, I mean it! If you haven't done any or much modeling, don't sweat it! Sometimes those have turned out to be my favorite people to paint! The important thing is to relax, be patient, and bring a great sense of humor (a good movie to watch doesn't hurt either- I have a projector!).

I aim to paint all kinds of body shapes, sizes and ages, especially expectant mothers-to-be!!! I am looking for strength and endurance in holding poses while I paint you and want you to add interesting poses to a photo shoot. I'm honestly looking for people with good attitudes who are reliable and fun over divas. I want you to feel attractive and a part of something truly unique and interesting!

Model Preparation

Bodypainting is an amazing, confidence boosting experience that can open up opportunities to explore a whole other side of yourself!

PREPARING THE BODY

Remove body hair where necessary.

Moisturize in the evening but not the morning unless specified for certain types of paint.

Remember to stretch before we begin and throughout the day to avoid muscle cramps!

WHAT TO BRING:

Please bring a solide white or tan g-string thong without lace or decoration. Seamless with a bit of spandex works best. This will be all you wear unless otherwise specified in advance. This WILL be painted on and paint will not wash out.

You will need to bring flip flops, a towel and a coverup to wear over the paint (paint is not guaranteed to wash out so keep that in mind).

Please also bring the following: hair brush and rubber bands, baby wipes, healthy snacks, bottled water (sip throughout the day), CD/ipod (and player) and/or a movie of your choice.

WHAT NOT TO BRING:

Drugs, basically. Especially to location shoots where we have to drive you. This includes pot. We don't feel like getting arrested and I need your full attention and concentration during the shoot. If this is an issue for you, please let me know and I'd be happy to book another model.

TO REMOVE PAINT:

Water based paints (including professional bodypaint, acrylics and airbrush) come off in the shower, but it never hurts to have some make up remover handy for some of the more stubborn colors.

Cream based paints come off best by removing the paint with a wash cloth and baby wipes, then removing with cold cream and a shower. I rarely use cream based paints.

I'm also told baby oil works wonders.

Please plan on no showers at the site or studio unless otherwise specified.

WHILE YOU ARE PAINTED (tips are taken from the book
"Bringing Bodypainting to Life" von Karala Barendregt.)

Try to keep the body as relaxed as possible. Drink water in small mouthfuls spaced over time.
Drinking a whole bottle of water at once makes going to the toilet more constant.
Keep muscles warm by tensing and relaxing them. Do mini stretches that don't disturb the artist.
Eat food that will give energy but not be too heavy or messy.
Fruit, muesli, light grainy bread can make good energy snacks.
Sugar gives a fast boost but no lasting energy so don't rely on it all day.
Energy drinks or energy lozenges are good just before going on stage or into the photography area but don't use them all day as they can also bring on a drop in energy.

***If you are a smoker, on your period, or have health issues, please let me know in advance so we can be sensitive to your needs.

Be aware of artist needs.
Where are they painting?
Is it a small detail?
Can you move to help?
Do you already know your artist?
If not speak with them about their idea so that you can prepare yourself for your performance and posing.
Do they have music for you to dance to? Listen to it when possible.

Performance.A performance should have a beginning, middle and end.
Move in an appropriate way to reflect the body art.
Be dramatic. Make eye contact with the audience, photographers and video crew, and interact.
Enjoy it! Make every performance something to remember.

Photography .
Photographing the art work is very important as it is the only way to preserve body art.
Do a variety of poses that complement the artwork.
Don't move too quickly as the photographers need time to frame their pictures. Listen to the camera flashes!
If the photographers are clicking furiously then it is a good pose.
Keep it a little longer and try to make eye contact with all photographers as.
Do small variations on that pose.
When the flashes go quiet then try something new. Make eye contact! Change facial expressions! Try poses that use a variety of levels and make it interesting. Use the ground, and the air, jump, fly, be alive.

SO YOU WANT TO MODEL FOR ME...

There are three types of opportunities for models looking to work with me.

The first is the volunteer model, wishing to collaborate with me on a project I have already envisioned and am need of living human canvases. It may also include volunteer models for events including live modeling, live painting, fashion shows, promotional models, etc. The model has no say in the painting or photographic process, but contributes a great collaboration in pose, form, and inner spirit. If chosen, you will work out the poses in advance to create the optimal image before the painting begins. Each model will receive digital images, credit and, when possible, one signed print from the project. Please know I must work with each photographer's timeline to do so. Models must sign a model release form as these photographs are exhibited and sometimes sold online or in galleries. This is a great way to add bodypaint to your portfolio at no cost to you!

The second is a commission model, who has a vision for an cool concert, event, costume, "portfolio spicer" or other concept and would like me to paint them. The model collaborates on the design process, either with an initial idea or with a complete idea (for example- I want to look like a mermaid vs. I want to look like this character from Avatar). This could also include special bodypaint photo session such as pin up, fantasy character, animal, etc. The model may choose to share image rights or not. Shared ownership is the most common and least expensive. Hair, photo sessions, and prints are all available for additional charges. Please email trinamerry@gmail.com to discuss the project and rates.

The third is a hired model. I am sometimes am asked to provide paid models for commissioned events and photoshoots. I will generally give these opportunities to models I have worked with in the past, who have a strong track record of exceptional performance and have proven themselves dependable, available, responsible, communicative individuals to work with. If a model has flaked on me, I may be willing to give them a second chance as a volunteer model (if it was an emergency situation) but I do not hire them or provide them with high publicity opportunities unless they have proved themselves trustworthy through at least three subsequent volunteer opportunities. Please understand that this is my reward to the models who work hard and shine. Hired models may receive any of the following depending on the project: compensation, images, a signed print, copy of a video, a print copy (calendars, magazines, ads, etc), high visibility and publicity.

THE TELEVISION TOTEM POLE by Trina Merry
This video installation examines the urban tribalism of the Silicon Valley. Journeying through neighborhoods and cultural aspects of San Jose, this work features fine art body paintings by San Jose artist Trina Merry and a collaborative graffiti mural.

The medium is also the message: televisions were salvaged & most models were located using craigslist.com.

Suburbia- Part One:
Behind her mask, picket fence, prize winning roses, Napa wine, the San Jose suburbanite has a soul.
Informed by Abstract Expressionists, Mondrian, Edward Scissorhands.

Suburbia- Part Two:
The warm pastel perfection of Suburbia becomes a distorted reality on this "desperate housewife".

Japantown- Part One:
The crumbling Japanese culture melting into Americanized Japantowns; the old Buddist traditional religion becomes replaced by the religion of POP!.

Japantown- Part Two:
Fire vs. Water in this pop cartoon battle with a Japanese rockabilly influence.

Technology- Part One & Two:
With all the technology created to help us communicate we have lost the ability to make authentic connection.

Graffiti-When the individual lets go of walls to join a larger culture, something beautiful can be created without the loss of individuality. Friendships are formed.
San Jose urban artists collaborated to create a 20 ft. mural. Models were bodypainted to camouflage into the mural.

The Chase
A nod to San Jose bike culture:
In a struggle of nature vs. technology via a shamanistic journey, "The Chase" discusses in three acts the rise of humanism during the renaissance, the chase of technology over human power during the Industrial Revolution and the ultimate deconstruction of the human form during the Postmodern period.

I don't know what is so darn appealing about this ho-dunk barn-bar in the middle of the nowhere of the San Francisco Mountains.

Maybe its the people- Neil Young & other backwoods folk out for a good time.

Maybe its the drive- winding up the road until you can't stand it anymore and then- there is the glistening reward

Maybe its the seclusion- the possibility of history and culture and memory ripe on the vine for the taking

Maybe it just because I like performing with wacky Cello Joe

Hello!!!

Here's the info for the YOUNG CANNIBALS Art Show at the Citadel (the "Garden Studio" #404) happening THIS Friday March 26th from 8pm-Late.

The show's aim is to bring notice to two of San Jose's longest standing studios- the Citadel & the Cannery, which possess a unique artist sub-culture in San Jose's Martha's Garden.

The show is uniquely pairs co-curators April Gee, who spent a short stint @ the Artist Guild Mansion before recently starting a community-centered studio @ the Citadel, and Phil Tiger, better known as the phantom of the Citadel, a very talented "him against the world" artist who was educated at the Art Center in Pasadena.

Visual Artists include Jaclyn Alderete, Ben Alexy, Osvaldo Baron, Michael Borja, Michael Buscemi, Gabriel Coke, Michael Denning, Christopher Elliman, April Nat Gee, Jenny Jigour, Miguel Machuga, Santino Majok, Trina Merry, Omar Morineau, Rod Santos, Courney Thiesen & Freddy Vega.

Musicians include David Knight, Gianfranco Paolozzi, Amy Israels, Constrained Randomness, God Intoxicated & DJ Rob Riddle.

All artists will be painted in tribal face paint by Tiger and Merry, then photographed by Tinh Le.

There will be a book signing by Robyn Boyd, author of Rawsome Receipes & free raw foods for all.

FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

Dr. Sketchy’s is the world’s premier alternative drawing movement. Every month, over 3,500 artists gather in nearly a hundred cities (including New York, Hollywood, Sao Paolo, London, Rome, Paris, Tokyo, and Melbourne) to sketch glamorous, subcultural models and compete in drawing contests in an atmosphere of artistic mayhem.

Dr. Sketchy's was started in December 2005 by a 22 year old art school dropout in a dive bar in Brooklyn (Miss Molly Crabapple). Loud & Moving Show @ The Art Ark

For the last few years, Andrew Hedges has curated a fantastic February show at the Art Ark called "The Big Red Shiny Show". It gathers a large crowd and excellent art submissions.

This year Hedges shakes things up with his new "Loud & Moving Show" focusing on kinetic & sound art.

My two submissions were accepted into the show- a painting & a collaborative performance art piece.

The painting, currently on display at KALEID Gallery, is a four panel, 10' painting examining movement both in the subject & execution of the work.

The performance piece titled "Man vs. Technology" will include Omar Barba of Canvas Ghost Productions, Element 151 Films and a local jazz musician.

I'm very much looking forward to the show & the work that surfaces!

Famous High and Low-Brow Artists “KALEID” at Quirky “Two Buck Tuesday”

Dan Vado, Nicolas Caesar, Emma Harris Simatarian, Manny Silva and Apples and Bandaids are just a few of the artists lined up to speak and perform at Two Buck Tuesday November 17th.

San Jose, CA November 4, 2009 – Kaleid Gallery’s Two Buck Tuesday has reached tremendous momentum pulling in some of the best artists in the Bay Area.

Two Buck Tuesday was started by KALEID Gallery artists to "balance the equation” of the art business world where small, original works of art could be available to the public for $2 and artists could market their work and network. Two months ago it added a featured sketch artist session where the public could meet & greet their favorite Bay Area artists and buy freshly-sketched works by them and beefed up its performance art. It has doubled its hours and doubled its size, pulling in some of the best of Bay Area’s talent.

Each month, a different member of the "TWO BUCK TUES CREW" curates the evening’s speakers, live sketch artists and performances to keep the events lively and totally different from each other. This November 17th event is curated by Trina Merry.

On November 17th from 5-10pm the public can see and speak with many amazing artists, creative entrepreneurs and musicians and purchase $2 art (starting at noon.)

“Last month we had people waiting at the door to buy $2 art at noon and had to refill our art boards four times!” says KALEID Gallery staff Lacey Bryant.

The speaker series has garnered a cult following. It is similar to the idea of TED Talks where each speaker gets 10 minutes (or less) to speak and answer question. It is a quirky, eclectic event where artists come out of the cracks and the public gets to mingle with them.

“Two Buck Tuesday has been gaining momentum in the art community over the last year. This month will be equally eclectic and quirky but will draw from the pool of well-known talent San Jose has to offer. I’m looking forward to a high-energy event where high and low-brow art will collide and collaborate to create a fun-filled, free evening. Two Buck Tuesday is our gift to San Jose in this difficult economy and a statement to the art world that artists get resourceful in tough times,” says curator Trina Merry.

This month the public can speak directly with:

DAN VADO who founded Slave Labor Graphics and the Alternative Press Expo, one of the first comics conventions dedicated to alternative comics and self-publishers.

EMA HARRIS SINTAMARIAN, former KALEID and Phantom Gallery artist, is a professor at SJSU University who has shown at the Jack Fischer Gallery.

MATT CLEVENGER who founded Apples & Bandaids, a clothing company currently on display at Urban Outfitters that donates half its proceeds to “Empowering Lives”, a nonprofit agency that provides food, medical supplies, and education for third-world villages.

The performance art line-up will also include an eclectic mix of high and low-brow artists:

MANNY SILVA will live illustrate a book the audience writes on site and can then purchase later that evening. Manny is a locally grown illustrator, who’s clients include the Fillmore, Belle and Sebastian, Sufjan Stevens, and Old Navy.

GIOVANNA HUTCHINSON from Opera San Jose will share a song and her passion of the Japanese Lolita culture with a tea party.

ADAM KLEIN (Ironman endurance athlete, world traveler & entrepreneur) will share his passion of life and adventure through poetry. He frequently tours with the band “Cobalt Season”.

CHRISTINE BENJAMIN, a Two Buck Tuesday crew member and illustrator whose clients include Yahoo!, will be painting live.

Special music will be provided by Benjamin Henderson from the band “Good Hustle”.

The featured sketch artists will feature:

NICOLAS CAESAR -Nicolas Caesar is a self-taught artist hailing from Northern CA. Founder of the Scary Art Collective, his artwork brings forth a whimsical creepy landscape populated by beings both sinister and sardonic. You will see glimpses of Sideshow madness within his paintings mixed with a healthy dose of 50's B-Movie charm. The raw feel of his work twists the familiar yet remains strikingly original. Nicolas' horrific characters with their permanent, toothy grins reveal a playful quality to his art that challenges you to keep from smiling along no matter what atrocity they are currently plotting for your future.

Nicolas Caesar's work is in private collections in France, the Netherlands, Kenya, Japan, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Canada, and throughout the United States. Nicolas' web comic Mosquito and Spider was accepted into the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco. He and his work have been features on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, KVIE PBS Sacramento, Sacramento's Livewire, The Bay Area's KOFY Tv20 -
Creepy KOFY Movie Time, and Cleveland's The Ghoul show.

PJ GAVIGLIO illustrated the music video “Stegosaur” for Bay Area favorite “Good Hustle”.

MURPHY ADAMS is an illustrator & public works artist whose naive style draws on folk, outsider and children's work, wrapped up with a healthy dose of snarky irony.

BLAISE ROSENTHAL, an American Painter, is best known for his conceptual thickly-textured paintings of PacMan ghosts and abstract shapes.

STEVEN BORELLI is a thriving design and animation artist out of Campbell who balances the chaos he calls a life by visualizing on board the bizarre hallucinations dancing like sugarplums through the depths of his eternally deranged id.

MARK DAMREL works for an architecture firm in San Francisco by day and is an urban artist by night.

Two Buck Tuesdays is FREE and open to the public.

There are several dancey fun events Hawke has lined up & hes not only talented, he's also really nice, so they are worth checking out. You get a free copy of the cd at every event and there will be a cool green-screened photo booth at the meet & greet on the 6th that will allow people to take their pics in front of our art (so request my piece)! Kinda dope! This will travel to Costa Mesa next.

I was the Production Manager on this stop-motion music video shoot. It was fun & the band is amazing & delightful to see live so you probably don't wanna miss this.

This is a treasure hunt IN a treasure hunt! Filled with a cave of indie treasures all along the way! I freaking love this Expo! I started going two years ago and kickin it at my friends, Tender Loving Empire's, booth. Sadly, they won't be there this year, but I will because I am in a book! Its called "Ten", just like your favorite Pearl Jam album... Fellow VFC Artist Resident/KALEID Artist (and Art Center Alumni) Charis DeRemer helped publish it along with Sarah Curry (graphic designer). Fun Facts: Celeste Young (VFC Artist resident & my studio mate) will be there selling cool "kitty butthole" items & KALEID artist Lacey Bryant is also in this book! Im in Benjamin Winter's "A Lighter Side" Music Video by Element 151

I starred, last minute, in Benjamin Winter's new music video for "A Lighter Side". He's just about to embark on his tour in Europe and the vid may make it to MTV2 Europe & FUSE (fingers crossed for him). Wouldn't that be random?

It was shot by the awesome folks at Element 151 who are my new San Jose favorites. The music video shoot was hands down the smoothest, fastest shoot I have ever been on. Frank Door, the director, promised the crew it would be a 14 hour shoot and we were done in 12! That's talent! He took all my first takes (That's confidence). I really appreciated the level of respect & professionalism- its the refining fire of Hollywood at work... but guess what- everyone's actually NICE while making movies in San Jose! Novel! =)

I'm sure there will be a screening locally by the label soon after the tour so stay tuned!

I love this... in this economy, in this version of America- from fear-based message to fear-based message, I am trying to sort out what is our beautiful future? While also not missing the opportunity to expose the sad song- think its easy to pick one or the other- but both are simultaneous, both are reality.

I've started a new body of work... the studio is an absolute mess but so is the chaos of fear. I find myself angry- violent- wanting to lash back at America, at my own apathy, consumerism, experience over education/reason... I'm ready to move beyond post-moderism. Im ready to express more than spoon-fed imagery of pop culture. But its also my reality. Come on millenium! We are 9 years into a new century and still beating the same drum!

I have three performance art pieces I am formulating and I have about half an installation ready (for a phantom gallery).

Apathy, Robot, Voyuer, Consumer, Gluttonous Eyes, Dream & Simulcrea, a 3-D world, escaping but never free, Alice in Wonderland... Alice...

We have traded the drugs, sex & revolutions of our parents for:
Suburbia, video games, commercials, condoms, PC conversations, the Internet, the X-game shot Superbowl, tuperware & plastics, global warming, techonological alternative realities, coffee & cigarettes, drive thru fast food of the poor vs. antioxidants & leafy greens of the upper-middle class, a globalized homogenonized culture (ditched colonialism in favor of the global melting pot).

We are no longer searching to "open our minds", "free ourselves", "change the world", "love the one your with"... no... we are the culture who doesn't care, who lives off false emotions spoon fed by a televised, internet, texting, twittering society where the man who holds the information is king, and the one who can figure out how to stay up with all the communication devices, is queen.

We do not shock, we do not shout. We are a cacophony of noise, beeps & ringtones.

We will all be right back after these messages from our sponsors...

Control Exhibition

Here's some press covering the "Control Exhibition" at SOMArts in San Francisco. It's an all-female show that was juried by the Guerilla Girls West.
It was soooo much fun to meet them! I will post pics & press here as I find it.

San Francisco Examiner- "Examining Patriarchal Custom"

"In one of Korea-born artist Kay Kang's most striking installations "It's a Girl!" charcoal pieces, each bearing a Korean female name, hang from hemp ropes strung between three door jambs.

Dried red peppers, which represent the birth of a male, are strewn on the floor.

The piece is an altered representation of the Korean custom of announcing births: When a female is born, charcoal is attached to a hemp rope and hung outside of the front door; but when a boy is born, red peppers, signaling joy, are hung in celebration."

Quite Contrary Topic #1- Spray Paint vs. Watercolor

I was doing this fashion shoot yesterday for FORCE 129 Clothing over in the park by Independence High School. One of the shirts has a dude that looks like the Creature from the Lagoon that the artist has screenprinted on bright lime green and called "The Lagoon Typhoon". We were takin some pics down by the pond and there was a group doing a from-life landscape session with watercolors. The artist from FORCE 129 was inspired and wanted us to come back and paint there. He then said something that shocked me- "yeah, I think i have some watercolors or could probably bring acrylics". I looked and him and the photographer- both excellent urban artists- and I was like, "why dont we just bring down spray and do a collab here?" They both shook their heads and seemed to think they'd end up in jail if we brought down cans of spray paint.

Why is it ok to paint landscapes with one medium and not with the other? It wouldn't be tagging- we'd be painting on canvas or wood most likely- and, according to the definition above, we would not be engaging in an act of vandalism. But the sheer act of bringing down a can of spray paint could get us all questioned by the cops, or worse.

Very quite contrary.

Why do you think its ok for artists to paint with watercolors but not spray paint in a public space?

Anyone have info on whether or not this is illegal?

Little Red Riding Hood travels the woodlands of the Cello Joe Show!!!

I have been creating a progressive performance art piece while touring w/ the Cello Joe Show based on a Little Red Riding Hood-ish Character.

Night One- Saratoga's Blue Rock Shoot
"Little Red Octy"- The guys gave me the stage & played @ my feet while I painted my "Little Red Octy" character on cardboard- a tribute to Cello Joes passion for music & history as a street musician. First time gold leafing live! Loved when "Tin Cat" got up with us and started jammin- & the audience participation & singing was an AMAZING energy to paint to!!! I love all the furniture made of raw wood @ Blue Rock- very folky!

Night Two- Felton's Don Quixote
"Howling to the Moon"- I painted not one but TWO human canvases at this little backwoods Cantina. Both had never been painted before: Joe, an artist who has been a figure drawing model & is a "natural" body builder & Elizabeth, my friend & photographer visiting from Boston who said, "how can I NOT get painted? I don't want to be 80 & say, 'I could have been painted on stage but was too scared to go thru with it'." They are now officially broken in. It was a musically amazing nite- we had a digereedooo player & Joey even set down his Cello to bang on buckets & junk! Lots of backwoods folk gettin down on the dance floor!

Night Three- La Honda's Apple Jacks
"Hungry like the Wolf"- This time, I was the wolf painting Miss Lacey Bryant as Red Riding Hood (cape by "Beyond Wonderland") in the backwoods of La Honda @ Apple Jacks! I definitely underestimated the cowboy factor in this supposed woodland biker bar... but Joey was growling (& so crackin me up!), Celeste & I were gettin down (Lacey even belly danced painted) & we had a FABULOUSLY talented photographer named Michael Foley (& my cuzzy Kevin Powers) to capture it all!!! Grant Averill from "Picture Atlantic" says I'm traveling with a hippie band... I think Ive always been mostly hippie- I just luv my showerin & shavin!!! I like how Joeys starting to put me & what I paint into his lyrics...

Psycho Doughnuts Protest

Last weekend Mental Health supporters protested outside Psycho Doughnuts in hopes of bashing a creative move by stand-up comic owners to enliven a doughnut shop from 1937.

I found their arguments difficult to swallow.

See if you can keep a straight face listening to this woman trying to passionately protest against the "massive head trama" jelly doughnut, as she tries to make a connection between a jelly doughnut and U.S. soldiers returning from Iraq.

Psycho Doughnuts decided this doughnut shop, located on the well-trafficed corner of Winchester & Campbell Ave., needed an 80 year facelift. They took on a horror film theme, spiced things up with a "padded cell" and straight jacket for customers to take pictures, opened their walls to fabulous art created by Christine Benjamin & Murphy Adams, among others, and yes, gave their doughnuts themed names like "bi-polar" (chocolate with coconut on one side & nuts on the other), "manic malt" (chocolate with malt balls), and their signature "psycho" (pretzels, icing & chocolate doughnut!?!). They even have a weekly promo video contest. Here's last weeks winner:

The media was out in full force covering the event and it is the hope of many of us in the SJ Arts Scene that this will only help to booster doughnut sales.

All that time protesting Psycho Doughnuts really should have been spent on trying to get people to vote "No" on prop D & E today, to help keep funding for Mental Health, but clearly, dangerous doughnuts were the priority...

What I really want to know is if Psycho Doughnuts is taking a hit, are their neighbors "Balloonatics" next?!? Bar Mitvahs beware... =P

Your workin hard for the money. In this economy some of us are workin doubly hard! But I want you to still have my art so here’s a-what we’re gonna do…

You do what you do best & I’ll do what I do best!

I have put labels under the art pieces with the hours I estimate it took me to create the piece. Multiply it by the amount YOU make hourly & you have yourself a price*! =)

So what if you’re not workin?

If u are, say, an unemployed student but would like to art trade/barter services (ie- “for this piece I’ll help you install your next ____ shows, pass out postcards/posters AND post to web calendars!” Or “I’ll design you a website that kicks arse by July!” or “I’m a spreadsheet/admin whiz! Put me to work!” or “I’m an amazing video editor with equipment & time on my hands!” etc…), hit me up!

This show is an experiment. Let’s see what happens!

So surprise of surprises, I have a random Solo Show (as of Monday) @ Good Karma Resturant in Downtown San Jose for May! The Makeshift/Artisan Guild folks have taken over booking the joint which means they are throwing a party Friday nite alongside South First Fridays. It has been a little last minute as they have been snuggling into their near-legendary Soteria House over on 13th street, but should be cool nonetheless! Good Karma has generously thrown down a coupon for some free grub so you can check out their yumminess while also perusing art. Sounds like the start to a fun nite to me!

Easter weekend I was Creative Director, Curator and Artist for VFC's "5th Annual Stations of the Cross" (First time I've ever been a curator & Creative Director).

We got some press coverage of the event, including front page on the "Santa Cruz Sentinel". Its really cool that the community is both supporting this event and connecting to it!

It was fun to partner with local artists, businesses (Peet's Coffee & Tea and O'Neils) and the city of Santa Cruz to put on this event.
Thanks to all who made this weekends exhibit a tangible reality!

Why do some people believe hoaxes, even after they've been debunked? Why do stories of monsters persist for centuries? By turns playful, grotesque, glib and profound, Trina Merry and Kate Stewart use paint, ink, and things they found at the scene to explore the anatomy of a hoax and why we love to be lied to.
